Exchange - Belgium, University of Mons

BelgiumFall Semester/Spring Semester

Kennesaw State University and the University of Mons in Mons, Belgium have established a full-time student exchange program. Each year, up to two students will be selected to participate based upon strong academic credentials from any discipline. Students may participate for a single semester or an entire academic year. The University offers a selection of business courses in English, as well as French language classes.

Do you want to work in a professional environment where you will improve your French by using it in a total immersion experience for four weeks? Do you like to challenge yourself? Well, this internship may be for you. 

The Department of Foreign Languages at Kennesaw State University is pleased to offer to students who have taken French 3302 (and above) the possibility of completing a 4-week international internship in a Belgian public/private business.  When the students are not at their internship sites, they are placed in a youth hostel in Belgium, or with a host family (students choice).  Therefore, students can be sure to improve their French and at the same time take weekends to visit "la Belgique."

EU Immigration & Security Policy

Belgium, France, and SpainJune 3, 2017 - June 17, 2017

This intensive multi-country six semester hour program builds upon 8 years of study abroad experience and previously successful European study abroad programs in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Romania. It includes study of European and European Union governance specifically focused on immigration and national security policy. The course will include in class-lecture, textbooks and supplemental readings, on-site visits and briefings, and on-line material.

This course will give the student a strong working knowledge of European Union policy, governance and the political issues and debates swirling about immigration and national security. Attention will be given, to the extent possible, to the historical developments that have been critical to contemporary political issues. Students will also learn about various European cultures including aspects of architecture, art and music.

Students and professors will travel together to London for seven days over Spring Break to explore significant historical and cultural sites, unique neighborhoods, urban infrastructure, and contemporary issues that make London a living, breathing text. A project of each student’s choosing will focus on a topic related to the student’s discipline that can be explored while visiting London. Prior to the trip, students taking part in the 3-credit HON 3301 Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar class will meet once a week on the student’s home campus. Readings, discussions, guest speakers and individual and partnered assignments will provide context for understanding the rich history and evolving challenges that make London a unique destination in the world.

Paris Summer 2017: Ecological Urbanism & Installation Art

This program revolves primarily around the palpable experience of the sites visited, with group critiques serving as an integral part of the educational process. Site visits are supplemented with lectures and a series of selected readings. Class discussion is integrated with field trips throughout Paris. This plein-air time is necessary if one is to study works of art, architecture and urban spaces. Observations of human behavior, sketching, diagramming and analysis should be done on site if one is to truly understand both the city and its architecture.Students taking the Arts course will be able to meet with a practicing artist in Paris and visit some of his installations while learning about the city and how to respond artistically to urban settings.

The Germany study abroad experience begins in Munich with an intensive one-day training session that is designed to prepare seminar participants for the applied learning within the Communities In Crisis Disaster Seminar. Our KSU students will receive training from a team of international professionals associated with successful development projects around the world. The group will then travel to Berlin for two days of sightseeing and a one-day service project at a local special school. Later, in Rheinsberg, students will tour a famous Nazi concentration/death camp for women and will receive intensive training in community re-building through sport and social work.

Live and study for five weeks in Germany's capital city where you can explore the rich culture and history of this splendid city. Prior to WWII, Berlin was once Germany's capital. After the war the city was divided into East and West, with the capital moving to Bonn until 1999, when Germany decided to move it back "home." Since the reunification Berlin has been one big construction site, and became once again a vibrant city with a new look, but still plenty of old as well. Berlin has many museums, theaters, concert halls, and offers anything from a variety of international cuisine to neighborhood restaurants with regional cuisine.

GermanyFall Semester/Spring Semester

Situated on the German-Danish border, Fachhochschule Flensburg (Flensburg University of Applied Sciences) was founded as a technical college for training engineers, particularly those involved in maritime industries.  Today, FH-Flensburg offers 13 undergraduate and 7 graduate degree programs in 2 faculties (colleges).  The Faculty of Engineering offers courses in Applied Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology and Process Engineering, Media Information Technology and others.

The Faculty of Economics offers courses in Business Studies, Information Systems and International Technical Communication. The primary language of instruction is German, but English-language offerings are available in business. Intermediate-level German language instruction is also available for students with basic proficiency already.

Music History in Germany

Music History GermanyJune 9, 2017 - June 20, 2017

This program is a Study Abroad component embedded into an 8-week summer course at KSU (MUSI 3312 – Music History 1800-2017). A major component of this course is the examination of the Austro German influence in the formation of the Classical Music Canon – especially Beethoven, the German Romantics and the Modernists. The Study Abroad program will be based at the European Academy in Otzenhausen, Germany (EAO). Students will participate in Community Engagement/Service Learning Projects with either the nearby Celtic Village or the local Youth Symphonies. They will also have the opportunity to observe master classes, rehearsals and performances at the Hochschule für Musik Saar. The highlight of the program will be our trip to Bonn and Cologne. In Bonn, students will conduct research in the archives of the Beethoven Haus, the largest repository of documents and recordings about Beethoven’s life and music.

Art and Architecture in Italy

Travel through time to the early days of art and architecture in Italy! Learn about the architectural expression of regional hierarchies of governmental, religious and social structures as concrete solutions to complex socio-economic problems successfully transformed into built form and how the details in art and architecture reveal the techtonic, iconographic and the symbolic aspects of our built forms. Students will develop basic research, observation, and drawing skills in a journal from which a final presentation/paper will be written. Emphasis is placed on the development of a methodology for architectural critique. Students are encouraged to address architecture through the expertise of their own disciplines. Class discussion is integrated with field trips throughout Tuscany. The course develops critical tools for the analysis and appreciation of architecture, and for its role in the intellectual environment in which we conduct our lives. Computing in Italy

This study abroad trip for computing majors in the College of Computing & Software Engineering will examine the computing culture of Italy. The goals of the trip are: 1) to get a better understanding of the computing and social culture that exists in Italy, and 2) to learn basics of the Italian language to better equip computing students for a global work environment. The trip will begin in Rome with a day-and-a-half visit to cultural sites. The trip continues up to Montepulciano, the site of KSU's international education site. In Montepulciano, students will have three days of intensive Italian language study, visit computing companies, and take two excursions to Florence, Italy and Piza.

Education Foundation Courses in Italy

Education Major students will complete 3 of their required educational foundation courses as a cohort in Montepulciano, Italy. Students will spend the first 7 weeks on campus at KSU and the next 7 weeks in Montepulciano, Italy which provides the unique opportunity to compare educational systems, schools, and programs within the U.S. and Italy. Field experience is an integral component of each of the foundation courses. Participants will interact with schools and students in each country to complete all their field experience hours for each of the foundation courses. Part of the field experience hours will be completed in Georgia and the rest of the hours will be completed in Montepulciano, Italy. This is a wonderful opportunity for education students to make professionally related connections, reflections and projections on equity and inclusion issues regarding children and students.

First-Year Global Fellows Program: Tuscany

ItalyOctober 2, 2017 - November 21, 2017

Kennesaw State University’s Division of Global Affairs and University College have collaborated to create a unique opportunity for first-year students, the Global Fellows Program. Global Fellows fulfill many of their first-year curriculum requirements, spending the first seven weeks on campus and the second seven weeks in Montepulciano, Italy. This 7x7 approach is designed to help prepare students to compete in the global market, develop international and national perspectives, and get a head start on community, civic, and leadership training. On campus, students will begin their coursework in a traditional university setting, while being introduced to and participating in academic and social organizations and events. In Italy, they will complete their coursework at KSU’s Tuscan facility, a restored Renaissance fortress in Montepulciano, Italy, as they travel to such historic locations as Rome, Florence, and Siena as well as experience the Tuscan lifestyle with a cooking class and visits to the organic farms and vineyards in the region.

Global Healthcare Nursing Practicum in Italy

The students will spend 11 days in Montepulciano, Italy which is located on top of a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with one of those views that has made Tuscany famous the world over. While in Montepulciano, students can explore the illustrious legacy of this extraordinary area which dates back to the medieval and Renaissance periods. All accommodations are double occupancy and are fully furnished and equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Dinners in Montepulciano are provided; the remainder will be on your own.

The course will focus on observational experiences in the hospital and rehabilitation center, Italian conversational tutoring from the local language school, "II Sasso", and experiencing the Italian culture through guided tours. Also, the students will spend 2 days in Rome viewing spectacular sights of the Coliseum, Forum, Vatican Museum, and St Peter’s Basilica.

Studying how the Renaissance influenced Shakespeare's worldview and playwriting, students will also visit significant Renaissance sites, along with ancient Roman performance venues, in the cities of Florence, Verona, and Vicenza.

The Global Leadership Exchange: Year of Russia program will provide immersive, co-curricular, global learning experiences that will broaden world views and increase intercultural competences as demonstrated through participation in seminars, leadership activities, and reflective assignments. This year long program will culminate in a two week trip to Moscow, Russia, with members of the Year of Russia Faculty Learning Community. During this trip students will interact with faculty and staff from MGIMO (and potentially the American Center), attend a symposium and study a social issue that is relevant to that region of the world and the southern United States. KSU students will also have an option of extending their stay and taking part in the KSU Moscow Study Abroad program with Dr. Alice Pate.

Experiencing Nursing Practice in Spain

This course will focus on the practice of nursing and health care in Spain and the European setting. Students will interact with healthcare providers in multiple settings. Students will be assigned to work with English speaking nurses for five days at one of two hospitals in Valladolid, Spain. These experiences will be observational, as students will not be able to participate in providing care in Spain. While in Valladolid, students will also have opportunities to engage in the cultural experiences of the Spanish people as a means of strengthening cultural awareness. Additionally, students will have one day in Madrid, Spain for additional cultural experiences.

Spanish Culture & Research

Culture and Research SpainJune 3, 2017 - June 18, 2017

The "Spanish Culture & Research Study Abroad Program" constitutes a key initiative within the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in 2014 by KSU and the University of Valladolid (Spain), and will provide undergraduate and graduate students with the possibility of embracing Spanish culture in a university with more than eight centuries of history. Students in INED 7781, the first of three ESOL Endorsement courses, will have the opportunity to explore issues of culture, identity and teaching English as an additional language while immersed in a new culture and language context. Students in the special topics Case Study Research Methods course will examine in detail all the steps involved in the design and implementation of case studies. In addition to the regular coursework, participating students will have the opportunity to experience Spanish culture at the heart of the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León, where the Spanish language was originated.
