International Students

International StudentsStudents that are not American citizens, but are attending KSU as an F-1 or J-1 student, an exchange student, a permanent resident, or another immigration status may apply for the Global Engagement Certification. Your experiences in the U.S. as an international student qualify you for the GEC. For example:

  • If you are bilingual then you meet the foreign language requirement
  • All courses taken at the 3000 level or above count toward your global coursework requirement
  • The time you spend at KSU as an international student satisfies your education abroad requirement
  • Your essays should reflect your experience while a student at KSU

Below you will find detailed requirements for international students.


1. Global Coursework

Full list of approved global coursework

  • Undergraduate:
    Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of GEC-approved coursework with a passing grade of C or higher.

    Graduate:
    Must have completed at least 6 semester hours of GEC graduate-approved
    coursework with a passing grade of B or higher or ANY undergraduate coursework completed at a 3000 level or higher with a passing grade of C or higher.

  • Undergraduate:
    Must have completed at least 24 semester hours of GEC-approved coursework with a passing grade of C or higher.

    Graduate:
    Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of GEC approved course
    work with a passing grade of B or higher or ANY undergraduate courses at a 3000 level or higher with a passing grade of C or higher.

2. Foreign Language Proficiency

  • If students are bilingual then they meet the foreign language requirement. Students who are not bilingual must complete at least two semesters of foreign language. Transfer coursework may be approved.

3. Education Abroad Program

  • Time spent at KSU as an international student fulfills the education abroad requirement. Students must also complete a domestic project. A Global Engagement Committee member from the student’s college must approve all domestic projects unless service learning is embedded in the student’s study abroad program.
